Tech cabs
The back of virtually every Cardiff Taxi have been home to everything from first kisses to midnight fumbles and marital strife – but will the romance remain when passengers are recorded on CCTV cameras?
A Cardiff Taxi Company is applying for permission to install security cameras in Cardiff city taxis according to Taxicardiff.info
The plans being proposed by the company would see small cameras installed in the back of every Cardiff Taxi, with a small monitor in the front next to the taxi driver.
The images from the camera inside the Cardiff Taxi would be recorded to a hard drive and stored for up to 28 days. These images could then be made available to Police or the Council afterwards.
It is thought that the cameras would help provide security not just for Cardiff Taxidrivers but also for passengers.
The scheme has already been trialed in London and Bristol where it has proved very successful.
Crime has been a problem for Cardiff Taxi for a number of years.
There have been cases of taxi driver assaults and complaints from passengers about bogus drivers.
Cab firms such as Cardiff Taxi in the city are interested in testing out the cameras but concerned that some customers might be put off.
An application was put before Cardiff council’s public protection committee but was not approved as no-one from the manufacturer was present at the hearing.
